Food Studies Curriculum Overview

“No one is born a great cook, one learns by doing” – Julia Child, My life in France

Being part of the Academy Transformation Trust family, we ensure our curriculum is ambitious and enjoyable through knowledge and skills developed throughout their time at Bristnall Hall. It is inclusive and knowledge rich and it is broad in terms of coverage and (at least) encompassing the breadth of the 2014 English National Curriculum. We ensure it meets the needs of our students and helps to develop character, personal pride and the highest moral standards.

Food is a vital part of our daily lives and is essential for life. As our students become adults and have busy lives, it is easy to choose food which has been ready prepared. However, it is more nutritious and often cheaper to cook simple, delicious food. Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of nutrition, healthy eating, food preparation, hygiene, cooking techniques, and sensory characteristics – therefore, gaining vital life skills that enable them to feed themselves and others affordably and nutritiously, now, and later in life. We aim to encourage the development of higher level skills and resilience in a safe environment.

In Food Studies at Bristnall Hall Academy, our intent is:

  • To promote a love of cooking and an awareness of a balanced approach to nutrition.
  • To gain experience using a range of equipment.
  • To develop their understanding of food hygiene and safety.
  • To be able to develop an appreciation for ingredients and different cultures – to be able to cook 6 savoury meals before 14.
  • To be discerning consumers of food and to understand the issues surrounding food in terms of sustainability and ethics.
  • To see Hospitality and Catering as a career route that is wide ranging, involving many important skills and attributes.
