Spiritual Development:

Spiritual development involves the search for meaning, purpose and answers in science. From exploring the smallest micro-organism to discovering the origins of our universe. It concerns the emotional drive to know more and to wonder about the world

 

Moral Development:

Our understanding of Science has allowed us to develop new medicines and ground-breaking technology. However, with great discoveries comes great moral responsibility. Students will have the opportunity to explore and debate issues such as should we test medicines for humans on animals? Should we grow crops to provide us with alternative fuels when there are people starving on our planet?

Social Development:

Science is changing our society. The life expectancy is getting larger, people are driving more efficient cars, more and more people are putting solar panels on their rooftops. However, human activity is having a damaging effect on our planet and as resources are consumed people will turn to science for the solutions. Students must consider their impact on the world around them and start to look at what we can do to help the next generation have a sustainable planet.

Cultural Development:

Scientific development comes from all across the world, from people of all backgrounds and cultures. Some of science’s most important discoveries have come from other parts of the world and it’s important for students to understand this. From the creation of the periodic table to cancer treatments using radiation, these are opportunities for students to appreciate the global nature of science.

BHA Skills and Attributes

The outstanding skills and attributes we want BHA students to possess on leaving include:

High aspirations for themselves, setting themselves high standards – Students are challenged in science and are given the opportunity to achieve highly.

Effective communication skills – ICT, oral, written and numeric – to a variety of audiences. In science, students have the opportunity to research topics and present back to the class using a variety of methods.

Ability to lead and be a good team player – Students will work in groups both during theory and practical activities, taking on different roles within the group over the year.

Valuing diversity and difference – Students have the opportunity to listen to and appreciate other student’s opinions on ethical issues such as cloning and testing on animals.

Pride and respect in themselves and their community – Students are taught the values of safe working and tidy working during practical activity from early in year 7. Furthermore, students cover their impact on our planet both in KS3 and KS4.

Self-management skills including time management, decision making and the ability to learn and adapt – Practical activity throughout science will require a range of planning skills to be developed including time management during the experiment. Students will be required to independently follow practical instructions carefully.

Confidence and resilience – Students cover challenging concepts in science and will have to apply their learning to new situations.

Problem solving and negotiation skills – Science is a practical subject where often students will have to discover the answers to questions and test hypothesis.

More Able Students Students are set challenging targets to achieve in science which ensures they are always striving to make outstanding progress. Those students who have a natural talent in science require additional challenge. This is done in a range of ways including differentiated work or questioning, extended homework tasks and the opportunity to attend separate master classes to support students with revision closer to exams.

KEY STAGE 3 In Key Stage 3, pupils study fundamental scientific concepts in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The schemes of work cover the content in the National curriculum programmes of study and therefore develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. We develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help students to answer scientific questions about the world around them. Students are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

KEY STAGE 4 In Year 10 and 11, pupils who have opted for Triple Science will sit 9 exams at the end of year 11. These pupils will study Biology, Chemistry and Physics as separate lessons throughout the course. At the end of the course pupils will attain a GCSE in each of the sciences. Those pupils who did not opt to complete triple science will study GCSE Core and Additional Sciences. On successful completion of the course, pupils will achieve two GCSE sciences.

GCSE Science

Year 9 In year 9 will be the first cohort of students to commence the new science GCSEs (graded 1-9) which will be first assessed in June 2018.

As specifications have not yet been accredited, year 9 students will recap key KS3 concepts and begin their GCSE course following draft specifications. Pupils will cover the following topics.

Autumn Term:

Chemistry topics: Particles, Separation Techniques, Atomic Structure

Biology topics: Microscopes, Cells, Transport of substances, Enzyme Action

 

Spring Term:

Physics: Vector and scalar quantities, speed, acceleration, motion graphs

Biology: Cell Cycle and types of cell division, The nervous System

 

Summer Term Chemistry: The Periodic Table, Structure and Bonding Physics: Forces, Resultant forces, Momentum and Stopping Distances

Year 10 Biology: Classification, Variation and Inheritance, Homeostasis, the nervous system, hormones, effects of drugs, pathogens, interdependence and pollution.

Chemistry: The Earth’s Atmosphere, Materials from Earth, Acids, Metals and ores, Fuels

Physics: Visible light and the Solar System, the electromagnetic spectrum, waves, generation and transmission of electricity.

Year 11 Biology: Cells, DNA, Enzyme action, respiration and photosynthesis, organ systems. Chemistry: Atomic Structure, bonding, Groups in the periodic table, Rates of Reaction, Energy, Quantitative Chemistry Physics: Electric Circuits and static electricity, motion and forces, momentum, energy, work and power, nuclear power.

Triple Science

Students studying the separate science will also cover the following topic by the end of year 11:

Biology: Control systems, behaviour, biotechnology,

Chemistry: Quantitative chemistry, Electrolysis, equilibria, organic chemistry

Physics: Radiation in treatment and medicine, X-Rays, Motion of Particles, Ionising Radiation, Kinetic theory of gases

Revision Pupils will use time built into the course to revise for their summer exams. This time will be used effectively to target any areas of obvious weakness and to revisit content studied earlier in their KS4 journey.

 

KEY STAGE 5

Y12 students are working through the first year of the new A level Biology course which will be first assessed in May 2017.

 

The following topics will be covered by the end Y12:

Plasma membranes

Cell divisions

Exchange surface and breathing

Transport in animals

Transport in plants

Classification and evolution
