
Why are we called Darby?
Abraham Darby (1678 – 1717) – Abraham Darby invented coke smelting & production methods for brass & iron goods. He had a number of decendents. The house name of Darby is taken from his grandson Abraham Darby III (1750-1791)
In November 1777, Abraham Darby III began designing and erecting 378 tons of cast iron, to build a bridge in the Shropshire gorge, on the banks of the River Severn.
The bridge was completed in 1779;
This was the First Iron Bridge.
