Why are we called Darby?

Abraham Darby (1678 – 1717) – Abraham Darby invented coke smelting & production methods for brass & iron goods.  He had a number of decendents.  The house name of Darby is taken from his grandson Abraham Darby III (1750-1791)

In November 1777, Abraham Darby III began designing and erecting 378 tons of cast iron, to build a bridge in the Shropshire gorge, on the banks of the River Severn.

The bridge was completed in 1779;

This was the First Iron Bridge.
